Hans Christian Hansen and his sweetheart, Anne Margrethe, left Copenhagen in 1879 on a journey to Queensland, Australia. As soon as they arrived they were married and quickly had their first daughter. They started their life together in Rockhampton, moving later to Normanton and after 8 years migrated again. This time to Auckland, New Zealand, and now with four children, Hans Christian worked the land to support his family. Anne Margrethe had come from a very wealthy family in Denmark but there is no indication that her family sent her support, or even consented to her leaving the country.
